New Call for DRN 2010

NEW CALL for contributions to DRN 2010 Conference taking place at Brighton University on 14th September this year. We recently sent out a call for POSTER contributions and are pleased to say that we have already had several very interesting submissions. Please keep these coming! We are now able to provide further information about other opportunities for you to contribute to the programme.

The DRN 2010 Conference

The Brighton conference team have agreed from the beginning, in consultation with Steve Garner, that this year’s event should enable as many people as possible to share their research, and discuss ideas and work in progress with colleagues.

So as well as poster displays and the opening and closing discussions, the programme will include a choice of workshop sessions.  Each of these will include two or three short (15 minute) contributions, chosen to act as a trigger for discussion and encourage interdisciplinary exchange between art and design practitioners and researchers from other subject areas.  We anticipate running up to six parallel sessions in the morning and six in the afternoon, enabling around 30 people to present their work, in addition to those presenting posters.

Conference Themes

Each workshop will be linked to one of the conference themes:

  • Observation - what is particular about discovery through observational drawing?
  • Mapping – how does drawing support the generation of conceptual relationships and new understanding – for instance, through diagrams, mind mapping and other forms of visualisation?
  • Dialogue - what is the role of drawing in enabling and documenting communication and dialogue?

The morning sessions will focus on method, with demonstrations and examples of drawing as a tool for inquiry; we hope contributions here will include some practical activities.   For the afternoon we move into more discursive mode to address issues around the role of drawing in the generation of new knowledge and understanding.

We invite your proposals for any of these workshops. Please complete the online WORKSHOP FORM at

(if this link doesn’t open directly, please copy and paste it into your browser address bar).

You’ll be asked for a brief description of what you would like to offer, to help the conference organisers select the most interesting combinations of speakers for each workshop. These outlines will also be available to conference delegates in advance to help them choose which sessions they want to attend.

If you wish to display a poster on the same topic as your workshop, you don’t need to complete a separate proposal but can indicate this on your workshop form.  However, anyone wishing to offer a freestanding research poster can still do so by going to the POSTER PROPOSAL FORM at:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dHhqTV9DYmRyelJLV0tzMzFZN193QWc6MA

The deadline for submission of workshop outlines is FRIDAY APRIL 16th 2010 (so to keep things simple we have extended the deadline for posters to the same date).
Proposers will be notified of the outcome by Friday May 14th at the latest.

We are excited that the conference will provide so many opportunities for members of the network to share their work with others, and look forward to welcoming you to a very lively event. Conference registration will be available soon
