In this article we offer tips for optimising your profile to enable other users to find you easily and outline some of the new image based features we have opened up to general users of the DRN site as well as providing links to the website guidelines document to refresh your memory on creating articles. Use these recommendations to build upon your efforts and input so far to create a better DRN!

Dear DRNer’s,

The DRN web team have recently updated the site to increase access and flexibility, allowing individual users to upload their own images and therefore completely prepare the articles for review. However, it is worth noting that the smooth running of the site for the DRN community relies on individual contributors preparing their text and images according to the guidelines provided. One important example of this is the production of a 200px by 200px JPEG image for your article with 80% quality settings. If you are unsure of how to provide the required image we suggest you talk to a colleague or friend who uses Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro on a regular basis to get advice. Alternatively, if you add a comment at the top of your article such as “(PLEASE INSERT IMAGE INTO ARTICLE FOR ME)” then DRN staff will find the most appropriate image for your text. Another example would be the addition of quality POST TAGS to an individual article you are writing – this enables people using the search box at the top of the DRN site to find your information easily [so make the tags as intuitive as possible and re-use previously established tags where appropriate].

The DRN have also provided a set of guidelines and links to assist you in learning how the WordPress system works. Once you have used the system 2-3 times it is usually quite straight forward to contribute – but we do recommend you thoroughly read the guidelines if you are a new user. Don’t forget that WordPress TV has some great video demonstrations of general basic and advanced features of WordPress as a system [though only article writing features are enabled for the DRN website users].

TIP – Uploading a photograph with your profile and using your full name as your profile name helps others to identify you through searches and browsing the members list and also allows the DRN team to more easily identify and remove spammers. Adding an accurate professional biography also assists in searches and identifying drawing collaboration opportunities. Please go to YOUR PROFILE in the admin section and change your public name and add to the BIOGRAPHY as appropriate.

That’s all for the moment – you can see the original DRN introduction article for additional information. We hope you have enjoyed using the site and its new features so far and look forward to hearing from DRN contributors soon!

TIP – There is a useful site at www.pixlr.com Here’s some guidelines at to how you can create an image for your article:

OPEN IMAGE > CHOOSE IMAGE > IMAGE SIZE > Reduce smallest image size to 200px eg 300px high x 200px wide for typical portrait images. No side should be smaller than 200px. Keep constrain proportions ON. FILE > NEW > 200px by 200px

CTRL A [SELECT ALL] on the original image > CTRL C [COPY] > CTRL V [PASTE] in new document window. Use TOOLS palette [TOP RIGHT ICON] to move image around to ideal cropping. FILE > SAVE.

DRN Book List

For those who would like a copy of the emerging DRN Book List you can download it here.

This informal list was begun by Steve Garner from a brief browse of Blackwell’s online bookstore in August 2010. Using the simple search word ‘drawing’ resulted in 1000’s of returned books and I selected a number of titles potentially interesting to the DRN community. I have included very few drawing manuals in the list. The list was originally published on the DRN Forum and readers shared their own favourites which have been incorported into the current DRN Book List for you to download. Some details are more complete than others.

This list doesn’t purport to be anything special – just a list of books and links you might find interesting or useful. There’s probably many other useful drawing titles still to be added. Apologies for any errors. Please feel free to continue to share your own lists or titles here. You can post a comment with your suggestions and they will be added to the list.

BEATING LINE

Open Residency: João Palla (architect)

In collaboration with Pedro do Ó (designer/photographer) and João d’Olivença (constructor/photographer)

When: Exhibtion from: Thursday 29th July to Saturday 31st July

Where: Drawing Spaces, Fábrica Braço de Prata, Rua da Fábrica do Material de Guerra, nº1, 1950 – 128, Lisbon

The act of BEATING (the) LINE where the momentum of drawing can be found: at the transfer from thread to line, from matter to mark, both blue. The line is ‘beaten’ horizontally and then elevated vertically. A line-up system is then set up guiding the elements which will constitute this work through a specific use and combination of straight lines.

If on bi-dimensional drawing the use of line might risk the ‘fixation’ of forms, here line is used as an element that configures real space, making it sensible. And in this case, by using the physicality of line as a kind of body, this also confers a certain kind of physicality to space which poses the supporting/tension points, the mesh, volumes and dynamics created by the line, in an immediate relation with the architectonic structures of the space to which it adheres. From the operator of lines to the visitor of the space, the physicality of different bodies and its movement in space will then become the sensible element sustaining this work.

From the various construction line-ups to the structural tissue and its movements, drawing might in this sense reside on the manifestation or elaboration of a speculative idea, familiar to drawing, articulated to a series of actions, familiar to specialized procedures to those who operate it. Transfer methods will be used to place a drawn line on a wall or floor, and lines will be arranged to configure a particular spatiality made evident through a particular materiality. This sequence of operations will finally constitute the «plastic object».

Joao Palla
João Palla, (Lisbon, 1971) got his BA degree in Architecture at FAUTL (1995). He has a Master degree in Design and Visual Culture by IADE (2006).
He collaborated with the Architect Manuel Vicente between 1990 and 1997 in Macau and Lisbon. In 1999 he completed a thesis under the title ‘Bamboo as a material for construction in Macau’ with a scholarship from the Orient Foundation, Lisbon. In 2000 he co-founded the Scriptorium Architects in Lisbon. He is an active member of the Architects without Frontiers Association – ASF Portugal. Presently he is developing a PhD on drawing as an interdisciplinary process at FBAUL.
João Palla teaches at IADE since 2000.

Pedro do Ó
Born in Lisbon (1978). For a long time he has been using photography as a means to capture and reflect upon his surrounding world. Photography played always a main role throughout his Engineering Degree and Graphic Design Degree, and this had a great influence on the choice of subject for his Master in Visual Culture Thesis: “The photographer and the photographed subject: relation, staging or interference” (2010, IADE) which was developed under the supervision of the artist José Manuel Rodrigues. His interpretation of spaces was also enhanced by his experience with cinema (he worked as a photographic director in short-films), and by collaborating as a member of an Architecture Office.

João d’Olivença (1961)
Worked on a company in commercial and administrative areas. Was invited to develop his first construction work and specialized on several construction functions on his following works; working also on building maintenance. He then worked with the Architect Bruno Castro Santos as a construction manager, when he also started to specialize as an architecture photographer. Since then he has been working as a freelancer both in construction work and photography. For him, photography is an extension of construction.

The DRN 2010 Conference

Where: University of Brighton

When: Tuesday 14th September 2010

Keynote Lecture : Professor Deanna Petherbridge

The Brighton conference team have agreed from the beginning, in consultation with Steve Garner, that this year’s event should enable as many people as possible to share their research, and discuss ideas and work in progress with colleagues.

So as well as poster displays and the opening and closing discussions, the programme will include a choice of workshop sessions. Each of these will include one or two short contributions, chosen to act as a trigger for discussion and encourage interdisciplinary exchange between art and design practitioners and researchers from other subject areas. We anticipate running up to five parallel sessions in the morning and four in the afternoon, enabling around 17 people to present their work, in addition to those presenting posters.

Conference Themes

Each workshop will be linked to one of the conference themes:

Observation - what is particular about discovery through observational drawing?

Mapping – how does drawing support the generation of conceptual relationships and new understanding – for instance, through diagrams, mind mapping and other forms of visualisation?

Dialogue - what is the role of drawing in enabling and documenting communication and dialogue?

The morning sessions will focus on method, with demonstrations and examples of drawing as a tool for inquiry; we hope contributions here will include some practical activities. For the afternoon we move into more discursive mode to address issues around the role of drawing in the generation of new knowledge and understanding.

C4RD (Centre for Recent Drawing) presents the work of Marco Calí as part of an 'Online Residency Programme'. For the month of August 2010, Calí will create drawings based on the 1959 film, Tiger Bay. Drawing with ink on three sheets of tracing paper, he will recreate scenes from the film, as still-life of a fictional scene of a past moment.

“I see drawing both as a mark that exists within human mechanical boundaries and as a baroque exercise that brings the otherworldly and the ‘actual’ world together into one image. I see feature films as providing a vision from another world that is intrinsically a past world. They create an escape to the past that also links to ideas of death and time’s slippage. This is especially evident in films that slip our current sensibility and years later are accompanied with comments such as ‘Wasn’t he/she young?’ or ‘Do you remember those…?’”

Where: Centre for Recent Drawing, 2-4 Highbury Station Road LONDON N1 1SB

When: Wed-Fri 12-6 (Highbury/Islington tube/rail)

C4RD presents the work of Marco Calí as part of our Onilne Residency programme. Throughout August 2010 Calí will create drawings based on the 1959 film, Tiger Bay. One each sheet of tracing paper Calí will draw elements in ink from a single frame as the camera moves in the shot. By removing the figures from the scene he will attempt to reconstruct the set-up, effectively re-creating a still-life of the a fictional scene of a past moment. Displaying sets of drawings from various scenes in series, various time-scales arise – that of the layered drawings in each ‘frame’, that of the ‘frames’ shown side-by-side and that of the drawn/observed act. The drawings will be both layered on one another as well as set out in a film-strip-like setting.

Marco Calí is a graduate from the MA at Central Saint Martins and BA from Chelsea, Calí’s work draws from notions of everyday life, death and procreation. Calí is especially interested in ideas of narrative and play, the relation between ‘reality’ and what can best be described as memory, dreaming, fairy tale, ‘other-worldly’ or put simply, how fact and fiction sit with respect to each other.

The Google Doodle

This first video shows a brief history of the Google Doodle – the various designs for Googles logo on the home page. The video explores the origins of the Doodle and how creating these designs has created a worldwide community of contributors.

The Human Face

This video demonstrates the basics of sketching the human face. The outline of a face, drawn by creating an oval shape, is divided into equal proportions then features added. You might want to turn the sound down – the music gets really annoying after a while!

Adobe Illustrator 1.0

This Illustrator 1.0 demonstration is taken from the original VHS cassette released way back in 1987. Makes interesting viewing for those who have been using Illustrator over the years!

Take On Me – A-Ha

These two videos probably mean the most to those who grew up in the 1980′s. Take On Me was a landmark music video created for MTV whether you appreciate the finer points of A-Ha or not. The rotoscoping style and interesting story made it one of the most original music videos ever made. Here is the original video and also, a second video showing interviews with the animators and band.

The original MTV music video

The interviews

Tron

Following on from the previous 80′s theme is a video showing the making of the first mainstream computer animated film “Tron”, which was released in 1982 but overshadowed by the release of ET. This innovative and groundbreaking piece of work is often overlooked and underated.

Making a drawing video

If you can get past the awful introduction sequence, this video covers some of the basics [such as white balance, focus, exposure] of creating a live drawing video. One solution for digital drawing would be to download some screen capture software and record the screen whilst you draw with an input device – free software like http://camstudio.org/ would do the trick nicely [I used that to create the DRN demo video on the top right]. Download directly.

“Marking Time, Figuring Space: Gesture and the Embodied Moment”
Sara Schneckloth

“I recently wrote an article for the Journal of Visual Culture regarding embodiment, memory, and gesture drawing”

Sara Schneckloth
Assistant Professor, Drawing, University of South Carolina, USA

From the abstract: This article addresses the role played by gesture in theorizing embodiment in drawing practice. The gesture here is cast simultaneously as the material trace left on the drawing surface as well as an intentional act geared toward enabling participatory spectatorship. Both forms of the gesture are enacted through attention to embodiment in drawing as performed through the organs of artist and audience. The surface of a drawing affords openings for gesture’s potential to convey meaning beyond the semiotic and as a site for ongoing physical and aesthetic intervention on the part of the spectator. Drawing’s capacity for enabling multiple forms of embodiment positions it uniquely in the landscape of contemporary art as a site of vision, touch, and experience.

Sage Publications has just made the pdf’s for the article available free of charge at: http://vcu.sagepub.com/content/7/3/277.full.pdf+html
