A new article by Dr Eugenia Fratzeskou in DIGIMAG Online Journal for Contemporary Digital Art. This two-part essay offers a critical investigation into the notion of operative transformation and its role in the evolution of animation as a means of spatial morphogenesis in architecture, as explored in conjunction with its broader scientific and design contexts.

DIGICULT is an Italian platform created to spread digital art and culture worldwide. It focuses on the impact of new technologies and modern sciences on art design culture and contemporary society. DIGICULT is the editor of the magazine DIGIMAG which focuses on cultural and artistic issues e.g. art & science software art design etc. Below is an excerpt from Operative Transformations, the new article by Dr Eugenia Fratzeskou from the magazine:

Having its roots in cinematic modes of presentation and spectatorship as well as in scientific simulation, data visualisation and statistics, the development of animation has been influenced by the paradigms deriving from these fields. Contemporary forms of animation enable an evolutionary endogenic design that is complex, transitory and emergent. The ‘spaces’ that are generated, differ from the outworn model of Cartesian space, that is, of a stable, ordered, inert, neutral and void space that is fully controllable through the use of Cartesian co-ordinates. Essentially therefore, the ‘spaces’ emerge from the fields of cymatics & Quantum Physics, the contexts of informationalism and connectivity.

The new kinds of space emerge through informational fields & flows, they are dynamically multi-causal, nonlinear, relational, irreducible and incidental, as constants have been substituted with variables. Consequently those spaces conform neither to the notions of ‘ground zero’, singularity and objecthood, nor and the norms of Modernist abstraction and disciplinary autonomies.

The architectural designer, theorist and academic Greg Lynn’s work is based on a creative investigation of the ways in which digital animation can be adapted as a tool for architectural design, through an in-depth engagement with the dialogue between architecture and animation and the ways the one changes the other. As we can see in Lynn’s work, Computer Aided Design provides the opportunity to “retool and rethink” architecture, as “calculus-based design” is introduced. Such a digital tool enables the creation of spaces of emergence, through non-linearbehaviour (interaction) and new kinds of geometry such as “motion or action” geometry, as termed by Lynn.

DIGICULT is the editor of the magazine DIGIMAG which focuses on cultural and artistic issues e.g. art & science software art design etc. Below is an excerpt from Revealing Interstitial Spaces, the new article from Dr Eugenia Fratzeskou from the magazine:

The very roots of the concept of interstitiality and interstitial space can be found in Plato’s definition of Χώρα (Chôra) that set the foundations of the concept of spatiality, place, and placing, while the influence of Plato’s cosmology is evident even in contemporary science. Alongside ‘Models/Ideals’ and their ‘imitations’, Chôra is defined as an ‘invisible and formless receptacle… of all becoming’ where ‘Forms’ are materialised, in a sense close to space.

The most important characteristic of Chôra [1] is that its relationship with its contents is a dynamic one, as Chôra interacts with its contents, while being simultaneously distinct from them in an “unexplainable and complicated way”. [2]

A continuous becoming takes place, as asymmetry causes motion and change. Chôra is full of unbalanced and heterogeneous forces; she is both “shaken and shaking”. [3] Shapes are created through ideas and numbers. In such creation of the universe, the elementary triangles of the elements are restructured. For instance, during the transitional phases of this creation process, cubes may be disorganised by been cut either at their edges or at the primary triangles from which they have originally derived, resulting in floating flat shapes. Diverse elements are “bonded” with each other through the use of mathematical analogies, so that, “intermediate definitions” are connected. [4] In such a way, a mathematical matrix characterises the Platonic Chôra and enables the ‘birth’ of forms. [5]

In October 2010, as part of the Big Draw, AccessArt launched the AccessArt Visual Encyclopedia. Drawings were submitted from a wide audience of different kinds of objects found in everyday life. The kind of objects we take for granted, and yet over time, change in style and appearance. The aim was to create a visual encyclopedia

AccessArt Visual Encyclopedia : Call for Drawings

The aim was to create a visual record of the objects which are important to us now, in 2010 – a kind of people’s encyclopedia. The original call recieved a fantastic response. The drawings recieved have been sent by all ages, and all abilities, and whilst the project has proved very enabling for the participants, the end result and the juxtaposition of all kinds of drawing styles portraying all kinds of objects is very powerful, and very telling. Because of AccessArt have extend the deadline, and to continue to invite audiences to contribute over a much longer period of time, and to let the project grow.

AccessArt are now looking for a partner to help us maximise upon this exciting project. They had originally intended to create an online gallery of the drawings, which they still intend do this, although the cost of doing this has obviously grown as the response from participants has escalated. Additionally they would also like to investigate the possibility of working with a partner to curate a physical exhibition of the images, and/or a publication.

Anyone out there interested in partnering with AccessArt to help us reach new audiences?

The Google Doodle

This first video shows a brief history of the Google Doodle – the various designs for Googles logo on the home page. The video explores the origins of the Doodle and how creating these designs has created a worldwide community of contributors.

The Human Face

This video demonstrates the basics of sketching the human face. The outline of a face, drawn by creating an oval shape, is divided into equal proportions then features added. You might want to turn the sound down – the music gets really annoying after a while!

Adobe Illustrator 1.0

This Illustrator 1.0 demonstration is taken from the original VHS cassette released way back in 1987. Makes interesting viewing for those who have been using Illustrator over the years!

Take On Me – A-Ha

These two videos probably mean the most to those who grew up in the 1980′s. Take On Me was a landmark music video created for MTV whether you appreciate the finer points of A-Ha or not. The rotoscoping style and interesting story made it one of the most original music videos ever made. Here is the original video and also, a second video showing interviews with the animators and band.

The original MTV music video

The interviews

Tron

Following on from the previous 80′s theme is a video showing the making of the first mainstream computer animated film “Tron”, which was released in 1982 but overshadowed by the release of ET. This innovative and groundbreaking piece of work is often overlooked and underated.

Making a drawing video

If you can get past the awful introduction sequence, this video covers some of the basics [such as white balance, focus, exposure] of creating a live drawing video. One solution for digital drawing would be to download some screen capture software and record the screen whilst you draw with an input device – free software like http://camstudio.org/ would do the trick nicely [I used that to create the DRN demo video on the top right]. Download directly.

Publication Abstract

Computers are considered to be highly ordered and overtly deterministic devices, offering predetermined outcomes. Nevertheless, the algorithmic paradoxes of an architectural software derive from the complexity of its infrastructure and cause non-linear processes of diagramming. According to the architect Bernard Tschumi, any “transformational sequence” (animation) is a kind of “operative drawing”: a “prescriptive” and thus, non-descriptive activity. Nevertheless, a “transformational sequence” is not, by definition, “operative”. Operative drawing emerges when the uncertainties of our reasoning, spatial perception and the paradoxes of digital diagramming, are creatively exposed. This can only happen through the superimposition, but not the material construction or cinematic projection, of a virtual spatial configuration onto its pre-existing actual referent. This inter-passage between a virtual (absolute, alienating) Cartesian space and an actual place is where the relationship between the digital and physical boundaries of built architecture can be delineated. Entering this inter-passage is entering a diagram itself: a destabilising, interpretative activity in progress.

Dr Eugenia Fratzeskou will be delivering a lecture at ISEA 2010 RUHR Conference on 27th August 2010 at Dortmund in Germany. It focuses on her latest research and practice in digital site-specific art; through mapping the inter-passages between virtual and actual architectural spaces within virtual environments new relationships emerge between art, architecture, philosophy and virtual reality.

The artist Nicholas Hutcheson has created an ongoing series of short time-lapse drawings of the Antarctic landscape. In 2008 Nicholas spent 8 weeks as an artist in residence for the Austrailian Antarctic Divsion where he produced many drawings as he journeyed in and around the content. On his return he has created an online series of short animations to capture the sense of movement and time within the landscape which he now shares with DRN.

Antarctic Time-Lapse Drawings

Nicholas Hutcheson

“Out there, you have a constant awareness of movement and time. Some of it is so slow – gigantic icesheets flowing towards the sea at seemingly imperceptible rates – but then, you can also watch the sea water become ice, and weather fronts moving across the horizon. And the majority of what makes up the landscape is frozen water. It’s defined by this ever-creeping whiteness – in compositional terms, a mass of negative space.”

In a response to how to capture this within his drawings, Nicholas began to play with making experimental short animations – these time-lapse drawings of the landscape.
