The practice of drawing for Gosia Wlodarczak is one of “being present within space, time, and language.” Choosing to work in public and private spaces rather than in a studio, Wlodarczak records her environment as it appears in front of her eyes and in her body, her hand responding to movements, details, impressions. A 12-day performance drawing process of pigment marking on glass wall and windows. Work commissioned by the Singapore Biennale 2011.

Singapore Biennale: Open House 2011

In Singapore, during Hari Raya, Deepavali and Chinese New Year, people open their homes to others, inviting them to visit, eat and talk. This is not only a gesture of hospitality and goodwill but also an opportunity to reflect, negotiate and exchange.

In the same way, Singapore Biennale has thrown open its doors to invite artists to Singapore to visit, create art and offer their own perspectives and creative approaches on ideas like culture, points of views, connections with others and moving across borders.

The Royal Academy of Arts presents the first major retrospective exhibition of Jean-Watteau's (1684-1721) drawings to be held in the UK. The exhibition contains over 80 works on paper produced by the French artist and takes place from 12th March to 5th June 2011.

The exhibition is organised chronologically and examines the development and mastery of his drawing methods. The drawings selected for the exhibition demonstrate the full range of Watteau’s subject matter; from fêtes galantes, (a genre Watteau invented which depicted social gatherings of elegant people in parkland settings) and theatre pieces to portraits and shop interiors.

Drawing lay at the heart of Watteau’s creative process; he prized his drawings and kept them in bound volumes which enabled him to refer to them when composing his paintings as they were an essential source of inspiration for figure poses. Throughout his career Watteau worked continually in red chalk; early works using this medium on display include The Shipwreck c. 1710 and Interior of a Draper’s Shop c. 1710-11. Although he achieved as broad a range of colour and tone as is possible through this medium, he is best known for his mastery of the trois crayons technique, the subtle manipulation and expert balancing of red, black and white. He made very little use of pen and ink and occasionally combined chalk with graphite, and also employed washes.

Watteau: The Drawings has been organised by the Royal Academy of Arts. The exhibition has been curated by Pierre Rosenberg, Académie Française, Président-Directeur of the Musée du Louvre, Louis-Antoine Prat, Chargé de mission, Département des Arts graphiques, Musée du Louvre and Katia Pisvin, Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Please note: The Royal Academy will close early (1pm) on 2 June 2011.

HOLD ME! TOUCH ME! FEEL ME!

Visitors to the Usher Gallery in Lincoln will be able to select, take off the shelf and browse through over 200 sketchbooks on loan from contemporary artists, architects, designers and makers. These sketchbooks are included in the Library zone of ‘The Moment of Privacy Has Passed’ an innovative and engaging exhibition of sketchbooks curated by John Plowman. The exhibition focuses on the ways in which we can engage with ‘the sketchbook’ in a gallery context.

Divided into four zones the exhibtion incorportates the conventional modes of display of the Cabinet and Wall, the cutting edge of the Digital and the innovative Library. Each of these zones will offer visitors to the exhibtion a different experience of engagement with the sketchbooks.

The sketchbook can be viewed as private and personal, a creative space in which thoughts and ideas are noted in a variety of ways by, amongst others, artists, architects, designers. Making these private and self-referential sketchbooks visible within a gallery context will offer up new insights and perspectives on this hitherto invisible aspect of the creative process.

The Cabinet, Wall and Digital zones will feature sketchbooks from contemporary artists including Grayson Perry and Simon Faithfull as well as historic sketchbooks from the Usher Gallery’s collections.

From a pictogram that transcends language barriers, a visualisation of topography, an emotional response to words or thoughts and as a formal means of communication. Working drawings are the (sometimes instant) solution to many problems. Find out more about Working Drawings' exhibition and conference in Sheffield.

In late 2008 British soldiers about to leave for Iraq are sketched by war artist, Xavier Pick, who spent the next six weeks with them. He was given exclusive 24-hour access to the troops, allowing him to make hundreds of drawings and sketches. Listen to his experiences reported on a Radio 4 radio programme via iPlayer.
