I am Irish American, born on the east coast of the USA. I attended Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and graduated Magna Cum laude with a BFA in Painting. I received my MFA in Painting at Western Connecticut State and immediately took a position as Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University School of Art Design and Media. Presently, I have been living in Singapore for five years. While in the USA besides painting many mural commissions, selling and exhibiting work, I founded and directed an art studio for adults with disabilities. This studio is still successful today. My introduction to Asia began in 1986 when I traveled to Indonesia carrying the pictures, letters and money from Indonesia foreign workers in New York to their families on Java. Presently, this thread has continued through portraits of people on the fringes of society in Asia. I have been painting and drawing prostitutes, foreign workers, and maids in locations such as Kolkata India, Singapore and Shenzhen China in the past 4 years. The work constitutes an empathy, sharing the same space, and time with the subject, listening and participating in their concerns and daily life. I’m using painting and drawing as a means of communicating, with people on the fringe of society. The work takes the studio out of the private space and onto the public space of the street.
